As a postmortem on the last post I wrote regarding the search for a means of auto-posting daily Twitter digests to Blogger, I wanted to report back on the outcomes of the investigation.
In the end I gave up. After many days of looking and searching – first for an easy solution and then progressively more and more complex ones as the week drew on – I ultimately realised I was developing an increasingly convoluted design merely to stay with a free public blogging service.

Just in the last two days I’ve decided to make some fairly sweeping changes to the commenting system on this blog and have installed the Disqus Comment System. This video is a basic overview of what Disqus is, how you set it up (primarily from the standpoint of self-hosted WordPress blogs), as well as a discussion on the implications that the framework has for readers as well as site owners.

I read a lot of different blogs – a whole lot of them in fact. I also comment on many of them. However I’ve found that in doing this it’s exceptionally difficult to remember what you said where, and to whom. Some times I’ll bookmark a specific post with the intent of returning later to follow up on the discussion, but this rarely happens in practice.

I don’t link to Twitter updates nearly as much as I used to – largely because I’m not using Twitter as much as I used to – but one of the headaches of doing so was always how best to reference them. Yes, each update has its own permalink and you can include it as a URL in the post, but given how short Twitter updates are I always felt doing that was wasting the readers’ time.
