It’s times like this I realise how incredibly boring and straight-laced I really am. Why can’t I think up stuff like this?
Jim Groom has just posted about an upcoming presentation he will be delivering this Friday at Duke University’s Instructional Technology Showcase titled “Fragmented Identities: A Domain of One’s Own”. In typical Groom style, the presentations sounds to be extraordinarily creative and entertaining, while delivering an important message.
The premise of the presentation, among other things, is to discuss the power of the FeedWordPress plugin for WordPress. As he continues:
“I’ve set up a UMW Blog for this presentation here and come presentation time I plan on showing them this blank slate, and then asking anyone from the audience who is interested to share their feed. After about a minute or so, I will pull the switch and update the site via FeedWordPress, and whammo!–I’d like the site to be overflowing with posts, images, videos, etc. from a wide range of sites and services to re-enforce the power of blogs as aggregation points of our fragmented identities.”
But to pull off this grand feat of amazing-ness he needs some volunteers from the studio audience to enter their feeds into the blog - See his post for details
To top it all off he’ll be doing this after “donning a cape, fake moustache, and a top hat.”
Yep, I’m painfully boring. Perhaps I can be a straight-man.

“The Great Groom-gisimo”
How many nicknames can one man inspire?
I had at least one more – for the children and Sesame Street fans:
“The Amazing Groom-ford”
Raising his magic wand, The Amazing Groom-ford uttered the famous words:
“A la peanut butter sandwiches!”
Suddenly, what had once been a bare and empty WordPress blog was now FULL of content. Dah DAH!!!!
In fact, this presentation is much like the “Cookie Jar: Empty and Full” skit here.
well, It was because of this post that I couldn’t back out despite my cold feet the night before, and there is some proof of the trick on flickr, but the video may actually be entertaining if a bit nuts. I’m afraid to watch it, lucky it’s not out yet. Performative presenting is absolutely key to the what’s happening right now with information and the web, and while not enough people stop and think about it for long, I learned from so very much from the first commenter on this post and a dog from Arizona. It changed my life, I have been born again, my friend.
Once you go wack, you never go back.
I can’t wait to see the clip!
I for one don’t have the opportunity to do many presentations, so I always pay attention to the work that you and Brian in particular are doing. Speaking from experience, being in the audience of one of your presentations is a truly stellar experience. You can’t help but be engaged
I love the cape – you’ve got major cajones my friend
Nice one!
