Social Networking: Who uses it, how and why?

I just started this Seesmic thread in the hopes of gaining a better appreciation for the motives that drive people to use social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. I’m also trying to determine what usage characteristics – if any – need to be present in an individual before social networking sites will be deemed a valuable online activity.

I’ll expand on this train of thought with additional information once it becomes available. In the meantime if you have thoughts on this topic please consider leaving a comment – whether as a Seesmic video response or a text-based reply in the comments area of this post.
