Hi Mike,

I think that to a certain extent, Ubuntu is becoming the OS of choice for Linux newbies owing to the Asus Eee - anecdotally, people are buying Eees without knowing a lot about Linux and learning through using.

And like it or not, FOSS has to become more usable to be used - if Ubuntu is making an effort to become more usable, then more power to them.

Cheers, Andrew

I've been hacking on linux since 2000 and work as a professional programmer. I've used the Red Hat and Gentoo distros. In my opinion, Ubuntu is not a watered down linux distro as you suggest because it is based on the very solid (but slow moving) debian distribution. Ubuntu has taken the debian distro added some paid developers and a specific goal of making it run on anything and just work out of the box. They have succeeded very well. In addition, they have produced a distribution which works for the most hard-core geek because of it's roots in debian.
