Embedding your Google Doc Presentations

[Update: This post originally writting in Blogger. Unfortunately it appears that Wordpress doesn't support the embedded presentation.  You can either visit the presentation online or download the PDF version here]

In celebration of the fact that Google Docs finally supports embedded instances of user-created presentations, I have put together a short how-to guide covering the use of this tool and how instances of your presentations can be embedded in you site.

I also like the fact the larger presentation view incorporates a chat panel. Google isn’t alone in this addition by the way; I just find it very useful.

(Update: Upon closer inspection you need to sign in with a Google account before you can access the chat panel. Users without a Google account are given the option of viewing an enlarged version of the presentation but not the chat panel.)

  • I spent hours trying to find a way to embed a Google Docs Presentation into a WordPress.com blog with no luck. It is a shame it cannot be done. Do you think that will change any time soon?

    Nice presentation by the way.
  • Hi Joni,

My impression of WP.com blogs is that they're very strict on use of embedded media, javascript and particularly i-frames. Google Docs presentations uses an i-frame and from memory WP.com strips out most of the code snippet, rendering it ineffective. Based on the research I've done into the matter in the past, WP.com has not been particularly willing to discuss the policy stance on this sort of embedded content. So my guess is that it won't change any time in the near future.

This is one of the main reasons I left WP.com and started my own hosted blog based on the WordPress framework. I love the blog engine but really couldn't stand how closed it was to customisation options. Many of the key tools I wanted to use - such as Seesmic for example - were unavailable due to their limitations. So it wasn't working for me.
  • Yes, I have my own hosted wordpress blog, but use a wordpress.com site for our pet rescue. The wordpress.com blog can embed slide.com slideshows which are nice, so I wonder why other sites' stuff cannot be made to embed into the blog.

Do you know if the presentations from Author Stream http://www.authorstream.com/ be embedded on a wordpress.com blog?
